Does The Residential Landline Have A Future?

The presence of a residential landline seems somewhat superfluous especially in this day and age where so many people have made to the switch to digital forms of communication. The shift is not limited to the realm of communications as radio and television have also gone the digital route. Why then, do a lot of people still have analog phones at home? Is it a service they still use or will it disappear in the not too distant future?

You will not be surprised to find that the people who are in possession of analog phones are those who are either unaware of alternatives or those who are reluctant to use them. The most common and widely used alternative to a landline is a mobile phone because some people are still unaware of the slew of VoIP service providers such as RingCentral and others out on the market. Though making a call through a landline will come out less expensive than using a mobile phone, using the services of VoIP providers will be more affordable still, especially when taking long-distance calls into consideration.

VoIP is a shortened version of Voice over Internet Protocol. It lets you make calls by sending signals through an internet connection instead of the analog signals and lines traditional phones use. While some providers may still require you to have a landline before providing you with an internet connection, there are some that are able to give you an internet connection sans landline which means that your computer will be turned into your telephone.

Why landlines are still around

Another reason why we still see analog phones is because a lot of business and individuals still feel like they need them. One may reason out that without a landline, they will not be able to get an internet connection but as mentioned previously, there are now alternatives to connect to the internet without a landline. Also, some people may believe in the saying “do not fix what is not broken,” and if their analog phones are functioning as they should, there is no point in getting rid of them.

Some common misconceptions

The individuals that are still hesitant to switch to VoIP service providers may believe that with a digital phone, they will need to have their computers switched on indefinitely for as long as they want to have incoming calls go through. However, there are now a lot of VoIP handsets available that connect straight to the router which eliminates the need for a computer. It does not matter if your computer is turned on because these VoIP handsets will still be able to receive calls.

What may probably be the biggest reason why people still utilize their traditional landlines is that it is familiar and to them, very convenient. These phones have been around for quite some time now and change sometimes unnerves people. Despite the outdated technology these landlines use, they are bound to still be around the homes of people who are already signed up with VoIP service providers.
